The Cenobio de Valerón is an impressive collective aboriginal granary, carved over 800 years ago at the base of a volcanic escarpment in Montaña del Gallego. It contains more than 350 silos carved into volcanic tuff, spread over several levels, making it the largest pre-Hispanic granary in Gran Canaria. This site has an exceptional strategic location: it is hidden and protected by a natural arch approximately 30 m wide and 25 m high, perched on an almost vertical slope, which made it a true natural fortress.
The Cenobio de Valerón sits on Montaña del Gallego and was built over 800 years ago. Ancient Canarians carved more than 350 rock cavities across several levels to store cereals and other food. Hidden from view, the site also served as a natural fortress.
Once thought to be a convent for young nobles, research now shows this was not the case. Visitors can explore the site on a self-guided tour with information panels, models, and reconstructions, offering a clear view of daily life and social organization in ancient Gran Canaria.
