Canarian knive

Type

Handicrafts & Souvenirs

The Canarian knife, also known as a naife, is a traditional handcrafted tool from Gran Canaria. Its most distinctive feature is the handle, made of bone rings decorated with metal, while the single-edged blade is usually forged by blacksmiths. Cutlery craftsmanship has been particularly significant in Gáldar. The exact origin of the naife is debated—it may come from the English word knife, the Portuguese naifa, or even North Africa—but its design and decoration reflect Canarian artisanal tradition. This knife combines functionality with aesthetics, making it a symbol of the island's cultural heritage.
